Welcome

As a Christian, social worker, and teacher I have come to realize that our most vulnerable children suffer from the same basic challenge: social Isolation and/or unhealthy connections.  My work over the past 30 years has been to connect young people to healthy communities like schools, churches and meaningful work. The results have been astonishing.  Connected children are more motivated, responsible and self-directed. One of my most effective tools has been the game of Chess. When used strategically, it serves as an "on ramp" to relationship building.  This program shows you exactly how to  use the game to build relationships, character and individual performance.

Let's Get Started

Character Chess is a research-based character education program designed to enhance the way the game of Chess is taught to learners.  It is a values based program that teaches the value of character and the importance of being "good."  The program begins with defining character as adherence to a set of beliefs or values.  It goes on to describe some of America's most closely held values that will lead to success in Chess and in life. As a result of our efforts, The Character Education Partnership (CEP) has recognized Character Chess at Cold Water School in the Hazelwood School District as a Promising Practice.
The game of Chess itself is a character development program.  If one plays the game long enough, it is very likely that he or she will develop philosophies for playing and winning.  However, in Character Chess, we define several philosophies in the beginning for the learner.  These philosophies come from ordinary people, like teachers, parents, and business owners.  The idea is to intrigue students by exposing them to the deeper mysteries of Chess while simultaneously reinforcing the values of Chess.
These values include diligent and honest work, obeying the rules, respect for others, respect for authority, humility, worthy accomplishments, personal responsibility, and contributing to society.  As students learn these lessons, they consciously use them when playing Chess.  Thus, every time they play, the lessons are automatically reinforced.
Good character is vitally important in the success of youth.  Character Chess helps youth develop a winning strategy for success in life by guiding them through a program centered on developing values that are consistent with the world in which they live.  Ultimately, Character Chess prepares youth to win in the game of life.
