Character Chess is a research-based character education program designed to enhance the way the game of Chess is taught to children and adults. It is a values based program that teaches the value of character and the importance of being "good." The program begins with defining character as adherence to a set of beliefs or values. It goes on to describe some of America's most closely held values that will lead to success in Chess and in life.
The game of Chess itself is a character development program. If one plays the game long enough, it is very likely that he or she will develop philosophies for playing and winning. However, in Character Chess, we define several philosophies in the beginning for the learner. These philosophies come from ordinary people, like teachers, parents, and business owners. The idea is to intrigue students by exposing them to the deeper mysteries of Chess while simultaneously reinforcing the values of Chess.
These values include diligent and honest work, obeying the rules, respect for others, respect for authority, humility, worthy accomplishments, personal responsibility, and contributing to society. As students learn these lessons, they consciously use them when playing Chess. Thus, every time they play, the lessons are automatically reinforced.

Character Chess helps youth develop a winning strategy for success in life by guiding them through a program centered on developing values that are consistent with the world in which they live.
