Welcome

As a coach, social worker, and educator, I have found that many vulnerable youth struggle with social isolation and unhealthy connections. For 30 years, my work has focused on connecting young people to healthy communities through schools, churches, and meaningful work. The results have been remarkable—connected youth are more motivated, responsible, and self-directed. One of my most effective tools has been the game of chess. When used strategically, chess becomes an on-ramp to relationship building and personal growth. This program teaches how to use chess to strengthen relationships, develop character, and improve performance. By connecting young people to positive peers and mentors, chess becomes much more than a game. It becomes a pathway to success in life.

Let's Get Started

Character Chess is a research-based character education program that enhances the way chess is taught by intentionally integrating character development into every lesson. The program emphasizes the importance of being a good person by teaching students that character is demonstrated through adherence to positive beliefs, values, and principles. The program introduces students to a set of core values that promote success both on the chessboard and in life. Through instruction, discussion, and gameplay, students learn how these values influence decision-making, relationships, and personal achievement. Character Chess has been recognized by the Character Education Partnership (CEP) as a Promising Practice for its successful implementation at Cold Water School in the Hazelwood School District. Chess itself is a powerful tool for character development. As players gain experience, they naturally develop philosophies and strategies for success. Character Chess accelerates this process by explicitly teaching students valuable life lessons from the beginning. Drawing on wisdom from parents, teachers, community leaders, and business professionals, the program helps students discover the deeper lessons embedded in the game while reinforcing positive character traits. The values emphasized through Character Chess include: Honesty and diligence Respect for rules Respect for others Respect for authority Humility Personal responsibility Achievement through effort Service and contribution to society As students practice these values while playing chess, the lessons are reinforced repeatedly through meaningful application. Every game becomes an opportunity to strengthen both strategic thinking and character. Good character is essential to the success of young people. Character Chess provides youth with a practical framework for making positive choices, overcoming challenges, and achieving their goals. By combining character education with the timeless game of chess, the program empowers students to develop a winning strategy not only for the game, but for life itself. Character Chess prepares youth to win in the game of life.
